BM TRADA Certification

Fire Door Services
BM TRADA is a UKAS accredited certification body which provides independent third party certification fire services for manufacturing, installation and maintenance service for fire doors and a fire stopping installation certification scheme.
The schemes aim to raise the on-going standard of manufacture, installation and maintenance throughout the lifetime of fire doors ensuring the product’s fire resistance capabilities are maintained.
There is a legal requirement for manufacturers of fire doors to demonstrate the ability of their products to resist the passage and spread of fire. However, if they are not properly installed, their fire resistance capabilities can be seriously compromised. The BM TRADA Q-Mark Fire Door Installation scheme has been designed to provide reassurance to specifiers, contractors and end users that the product they have chosen has been installed correctly and that it should perform as intended.
Fire Protection Services
Where services such as water, gas, electrics or communications penetrate through a building’s fire resistant compartment lines, it is vitally important to ensure that the hole is appropriately sealed with a suitable fire stopping solution. Both the Building Regulations and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRFSO) require that the person fitting fire-stopping products is competent to do so and third party certification is the accepted means of demonstrating competency.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1. What is BM TRADA certification?
BM TRADA is a UKAS-accredited third-party certification body. It provides independent testing, auditing, and certification for fire doors and fire-stopping services, ensuring they are manufactured, installed, and maintained to the highest safety standards.
Q2. Why is BM TRADA certification important?
Certification provides reassurance that fire protection measures, such as fire doors and fire-stopping, have been tested and installed correctly. It ensures compliance with legal requirements, improves safety, and is often required for work on government and council-owned buildings.
Q3. What is the BM TRADA Q-Mark Fire Door Installation Scheme?
This scheme certifies that fire doors are installed correctly so they perform as intended during a fire. It gives confidence to building owners, contractors, and end-users that the product has been fitted by trained professionals who meet strict competency standards.
Q4. Who needs BM TRADA-certified services?
Any organisation or property owner responsible for fire safety in government buildings, council properties, commercial premises, or domestic housing can benefit. Certification demonstrates compliance with fire safety laws and provides peace of mind.
Q5. What are fire-stopping services and why are they necessary?
Fire-stopping involves sealing openings or gaps (created by pipes, wires, ducts, etc.) that pass through fire-resistant walls or floors. This prevents fire and smoke from spreading. Without proper fire-stopping, even the best fire doors and compartmentation can fail.
Q6. Is it a legal requirement to use certified fire door installers or fire-stopping contractors?
While the law requires that fire doors and fire-stopping products meet certain standards, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRFSO) also requires installers to be competent. Third-party certification, such as BM TRADA, is widely accepted as proof of competence.
Q7. How does BM TRADA certification benefit building owners and managers?
It reduces liability, ensures compliance with regulations, and provides evidence that fire safety measures are properly installed and maintained. It can also improve confidence during inspections by insurers, fire authorities, or building control.
Q8. Do BM TRADA-certified services apply to domestic properties?
Yes. While certification is essential for government and council buildings, it is equally valuable in domestic premises to protect lives and property by ensuring fire doors and fire-stopping solutions perform correctly in an emergency.
